Maps and City Schedules

States

Select a map from the list of states. The maps show all the rail lines that had passenger trains in 1950. Shown along each line are the cities where the trains stopped. Also shown are the initials for the railroad that operated the line – for example, C&O for Chesapeake & Ohio. You will see that almost every city in the country had passenger rail service in 1950. Today just a few of these lines still have passenger trains – these lines are shown in green.

After viewing a state map, you can click on CITY FILES to download a folder listing the routes and train times for each city shown on that state map. The first page of each City File shows the timetable covers for each railroad that operated trains to and from that city. Next, each page shows the stations and departure times for the trains that ran over a particular route. A route may be shown on two pages if there is not room on one page to show the trains that ran in both directions over the route.
